Avoca Beach local and personal trainer at Health Mates Fitness in Revesby, Liam Meadham, has taken out the #AussieHeartHero competition and won a brand new Automatic External Defibrillator (AED) for his community.
The award recognises Liam’s heroic effort in using a defib to save the life of someone suffering a sudden cardiac arrest and advocating for improved access to defibs.
With around 30,000 people dying from sudden cardiac arrest death every year, Liam’s story highlights the benefits of having easy access to defibs.
Liam’s story centres on one of his clients who felt ill after a training session. Within minutes of Liam telling his client to sit and rest, his client went into cardiac arrest.
Liam began performing CPR, then applied a defib and continued to give CPR until the paramedics arrived.
The client was taken to hospital, underwent cardiac surgery, and made a full recovery with no brain damage.
In honour his actions, the client and his wife went on to name their next child, Liam.
Former Australian Ironman surf life saving champion and campaign spokesperson, Guy Leech said Liam was a deserved winner of a defib for his community.
“Liam is an absolute Aussie Heart Hero and is a deserved winner of a defib for his community,” Leech said.
Congratulations, Liam! Thanks to you and all those who entered we Australian Hearts will continue the search for heroes like you.
